Stories Children Love.

ABOUT

Storycraft Publishing creates books for readers aged 4 to 12.

We believe fun, exciting, stories which capture the imagination are the best way to encourage readers to develop a love of books that will last a lifetime.

Our philosophy is that every child should feel inspired after reading.

A New Adventure!

Michael Maguire lives in Burntwood and he thinks it’s the worst place in the world.

So why does he care when Baron Henrik von Rottenberg wants to flatten it to build a faster route to one of his holiday homes?

It is going to take something extraordinary to save the village.

Unfortunately, Michael and his friends have only one plan to save their homes and it’s the craziest idea.

But with everything against them perhaps chasing the craziest idea is their only chance of success.

Creative Writing with Allwrite™

Benefits

Meeting a local author in real life and hearing them speak with passion about writing can alter a students view of books and spark a life-long love of reading as well as writing development. An author visit can contribute to the recommendations in the "Moving English Forward" OfSTED report which encourages schools to develop policies which promote reading for enjoyment.

The National Literacy trust published a report showing author visits to schools have a positive relationship with children and young people’s reading skills, as wellas  their enjoyment and confidence in both reading and writing. The 2019 report, Writer Visits and Children’s and Young People's Literacy Engagement, uses data from their 2019 Annual Literacy Survey and the Great School Library Campaign.

Pupils who had had an author visit that academic year:

Were twice as likely to read above the expected level for their age (31% vs 17%)

Were more likely to enjoy reading (68% vs 47%) and writing (44% vs 32%)

Were more likely to be highly confident in their reading (37% vs 25%) and writing (22% vs 17%)

However, the report found that only 1 in 4 pupils had an author visit in the academic year, and those from the poorest backgrounds were most likely to miss out.

Visit Details

John will deliver 2 x 30 minute presentations on creative writing to year groups or classes of your choosing (Year 4 is the recommended minimum age).

His Allwrite™ system follows a 3 -stage model.

Stage I - CAN

This is often a critical element that is overlooked. John instills in every pupil a positive mental attitude by showing how they are already amazing achievers who have refused to give up when faced with much tougher challenges in the past.

Stage II - WANT

John demonstrates that creative writing is already part of their life and central to the things they enjoy. Creative writing will not be a distraction stopping them from doing what they love most, it will, in fact, enhance that enjoyment. He encourages pupils to see themselves as creators and not just consumers.

Stage III - DO

Pupils are told the “Art of Storytelling.” How other creators use a “secret structure” that underpins all storytelling. A structure that will act as a guideline for them as they select the type of creative writing that appeals to them most.

The Author

John Magee is married with two children. Before becoming a children‘s author he spent nearly 30 years as a consultant advising business owners and Chief Executives on how to achieve desired goals.

His first work, "Wisdom for Children" explained 12 of the most loved proverbs within a modern context. This work was followed by books for older readers aged 8-12;

“I Swapped Dad for a Robot”

“Granny Ball” and

“Wheels of Fire.”

His next book, “The Craziest Idea,” is scheduled for release in August 2024 while 2025 will bring a trilogy of further adventures under the "Edison Plugit" series.

John is passionate about showing children how creative writing is already such an important part of their lives, bringing them incredible happiness.

Using his years of consulting experience he has developed the Allwrite approach which provides children with the necessary tools to begin their creative writing journeys.

Message from the author.

“We were so inspired that there were notebooks aplenty in the playground at lunchtime and stories being composed by lots of boys and girls.”

The above quote is from a literacy co-ordinator following my visit to their school. Her words brilliantly explain what I do and how I measure success.

When I came late to writing children’s books after a successful consulting career, I discovered the book industry describing schools as a key target and visits as an efficient tactic to sell books; the language was all too familiar to me from my years in business.

The question for me was, did I want to treat school visits as just a sales trip, the success of which, would be measured by book orders?

Did I want to think of the children as consumers and their parents as potential customers?

The answer was an emphatic no. I do, of course, recognize that book fairs are important. They can place lots of reading material in the hands of children, provide free books to school libraries, and sometimes even provide additional funds via commission payments. It’s a machine that works so why do something more? Right?

Well, I suggest we should do something more because it’s the right thing to do. By setting aside just one hour per year we can convince every child that they are so much more than a mere consumer; they were born to be a creative writer.

Let’s make them believe that in the future, they will be the people producing music, books, television, film, theatre, social media, and video games for others to enjoy.

We just need to have role models who tell them they can; why they should want to; and how they can.

And so I created Allwrite™

I am seeking to work with schools so we can inspire every student to take the first steps on an exciting creative journey of their own.

A journey that might start simply with...

“notebooks aplenty in the playground at lunchtime and stories being composed by lots of boys and girls,”

...but who knows where their adventures might eventually lead?

Let’s find out together. Please make contact so we can discuss what works best for your school and schedule a visit.

Kindest wishes,

John Magee
